PM UNSIGNED CERTIFIED: NORTHE'N LIGHTS

Check out PM's newest entry to UNSIGNED CERTIFIED Northe'n Lights.

Northe'n Lights is a collaborative production team of northwest artists Terminill and Sonny dedicated to bringing exposure to the northwest hip hop scene. While both artists come from two uniquely different musical backgrounds, they have found common grounds in productions and were able to collaborate to create a sound that varied from any style they had experiemented with in solo production endeavors. Kyle Steckley, better known publically as Terminill began producing in 2002. His influenced ranged to encompass smooth R&B like En Vogue, Brandy and Boyz 2 Men as well as more notorious hip hop styles such as MC Hammer, Dr. Dre, Warren G and Snoop Dogg. He sold his first beats to an artist named Amsterdam and worked diligently to improve his skill and upgrade his equipment. In 2005 he began Flatline Productions and in 2007 Terminill established and began operation of an in-home studio. He currently works on FL8, MPD24 and MAudio 88ES keyboard for beats, Protools for mixing and turntables to sample vinyl. Terminill has worked extensively with notorious northwest artists such as Cool Nutz, Kenny Mack, Maniac Lok, Ragen Fykes, Braille and The Wright Family. Willie Horton, who goes by the artist name Sonny, was born in Memphis, Tennessee and was introduced to music through the sounds of Isaac Hayes, Al Green and Stevie Wonder. He found a passion for hip hop through artists like N.W.A. and Ice Cube. In 2002, Sonny began working with Portland, Oregon rap super group Seventh Science with emcees Luck One Conscious, Illa J. and Mac Smiff. The group split when one member was incarcerated and another hospitalized after releasing their first album Live from the Underground. Sonny and Mac Smiff broke off to form the group Known Perfection and it was at that point that he began toying with production along with lyrics. Terminill and Sonny met in March of 2008 when Sonny was a client of Flatline Productions. The two found common artist grounds with one another and found that they influenced each other creatively in a way that was able to produce a sound that had been previously untouched to either of them. They started a collaborative project under the name Northe'n Lights and composed their premier album, a compilation of various northwest artists entitled Cut 'Em or Pay 'Em being released October 2009. Northe'n Lights has ambition to not only create a personal buzz around their name and a demand for their music, but to bring recognition to the northwest hip hop scene as a whole, and shed light on the talent that resides there in a real way. Their debut album contains a wide array of different styles ranging from underground lyricism to R&B vocals. A mainstream oriented sound appears between gully street style hip hop, as well as conscious rap with thought provoking lyrics. It features infamous northwest artists like Cool Nutz, Maniac Lok, Kenny Mack, Mikey Vegaz, Luck One, T Soprano, Toni Hill, Liv Warfield, Arjay, Mac Smiff, Illmaculate and many more. Northe'n Lights makes a seamless transition from solo artists to group members, lending each other a rhythm that brings the other's skill to the next level. They represent the region in a way that gives artists the ability to shine their brightest and represents the true diversity that exists. With a limitless potential and staggering dexterity, Northe'n Lights are quickly gaining recognition as some of the top producers of the northwest area, and it is doubtless that the acknowledgement of their talents will spread well outside the Oregon and Washington hip hop scene.

Northe'n Lights, the northwest production duo of Terminill and Sonny release their first collaborative project, a compilation of northwest artists entitled Cut 'Em or Pay 'Em. The highly anticipated release features artists between Portland, OR and Seattle, WA with notorious names such as Cool Nutz, Illmaculate, Kenny Mack, Destro of Boom Bap Project, Liv Warfield, Toni Hill, Mikey Vegaz, Braille and more.

PM UNSIGNED CERTIFIED: THE DREAMCATCHERS

What do you have when you fuse together blissful ambition, raw talent, and an international flare for creativity? I-Wise, Steeve Sam, The Future, Parlay, Tone and Jay-Elz… in a nutshell… “The Dreamcathers”! Brought together via one common goal, one dream and one set of principals. Loyalty is the epicenter of this team’s foundation.

It all started in late 2007. The idea hadn’t fully formulated but, there was definitely a sense of a much needed fusion on the horizon. Armed with dedication, these individuals saw the bigger picture. Strapped with the tenacity to create music to make you feel good…this dynamic team was born.

Baa-ith “I-wise” Nurri-Deen, rapper/songwriter, of East Orange, New Jersey was born June 11, 1980. The name I-Wise came form the actual definitions of I; “The One Who Is Speaking” and Wise; “Is Deeply Understood”. Wise’s hunger to get things off his chest enabled him to vent his frustrations on paper through poem. It grew more evident as he began to rhythmically give shape to his ideas. Coming from a previous situation with a former group; Deadly Collision; Wise’s creative genius proved time and time again on wax that he had world appeal. Unfortunately this situation did not last very long due to creative differences. In his absence from the group, it forced him to strengthen his own individual voice. Today he is a member of a strong force…The Dreamcatchers. With this being said, he is pivotal in molding his fellow cohorts into being as open, honest, and creative as possible.

Steeve Sam, the singer/songwriter is also another benefactor to this project. Steeve was born September 9, 1983. Coming from a cultural Haitian family he was presented with the drive to never give up. Hard work was the words others may have uttered. Steeve, on the other hand was told to make it work. For Steeve, music signifies the end of confusion and the beginning of self expression. As a young boy, Steeve Began expressing himself by writing love poems to attract the opposite sex. Upon realizing the power of unspoken word, Steeve took his creativity to another level. He began adding melodies to his poems hence awakening the singer inside. Through his love for music Steeve has been through many different forms of trial and error, only to find this calling to The Dreamcatchers. Steeve and I- Wise met in a previous musical endeavor only to realize their paths would somehow cross again. Both parties, privy to carousel ride of entertainment decided to make an old fashioned pact to keep the love of the craft inspiring and fresh.

Sa’id “The Future” Williams, rapper/songwriter definitely lights The Dreamcatchers’ fire. Born October 13, 1987 in East Orange, NJ “The Future” had a special place for sports, which ranged from baseball, basketball and football. In fact, he met “Tone” (later to become a member) while playing pop warner football in his early childhood. While in grammar school, Sa’id was the face of retro hip hop. Back when hip hop was fresh and competitive, he was pegged the beat box machine. He and his friends would gather on the play ground and orchestrate genuine hip hop. It was there where Future remembered how hip hop basics made him feel good. He knew that if he could give the passion of creativity to the world through music alone he would leave his mark. Meeting back up with Tone, later introduced him to this super group.

Richard “Parlay” Copier, rapper/songwriter/engineer/producer bka the young visionary was born
February 12, 1987 into a family of the arts. Richard Copier was born to his mother the model and his father the photographer in Paris, France. Richard, swept away by the creative scene took in: Jazz, Soul, and R&B. Even as an adolescent, young Richard became interested in his father’s wide collection of old albums. During high school his peers were very impressed that he knew as much about music as he did. Knowing that his peers were interested in his taste and knowledge in music pushed him to tap into his hidden talent, taking notice to different variations of melodies and artists development. Rich enrolled himself into Touro University in N.Y. He majored in audio engineering and graduated by the age of 21. For that he was granted two thousand dollars of scholarship money, which gave him the ability to use what he heard and begin to create his own music. Armed with the influence of which he used to fuel his melodic arsenal, this became the frame for the group.

Anthony “Tone” Woolford Jr.
, rapper/songwriter/producer is definitely pegged the “Jack of all trades.” Born November, 1, 1987, in East Orange, New Jersey, Tone was exposed to music at a very early age. While growing up, Tone discovered other genres and time periods of music. With his musical ear gravitating toward the earlier musicians from the 50’s and up to the 80’s, his love and appreciation for the craft grew. He would sit in his room for hours just listening to music and dissecting the songs of its various elements. Though he loved that era of music, he quickly became attached to a genre that was growing at a rapid pace… Hip Hop, and it became his form of expression. Tone created a musical lane where he can be free and tell his story; painting a picture through his words and production. As a longtime friend of Parlay’s, the two joined forces and began to create. These two would set the spark that would ultimately light the blaze burning inside this conglomerate of artist.

Luis “Jay-Elz” Suarez
rapper/songwriter rounds out this collection of talented individuals. Born January 31, 1986, in Washington Heights, New York, Jay wasted no time with the future that lay ahead. Coming from a cultural Dominican family, Jay’s musical influences have a very wide range from Salsa and Merengue to Slick Rick and Marvin Gaye. By way of a relentless appetite for expression, Jay enveloped himself with not only the vibe of the music, but embraced what the artist’s true message was…Self Expression. It was in high school where the young Jay-Elz began expressing himself through song. Through a mutual friend, the alliance was formed between Parlay and Jay and Jay’s sharp wit and catchy punch-lines were the basis of what would continue to be the perfect addition to The Dreamcatchers sound.
