PM BIZ: DATWON THOMAS HEADS TO GLOBAL GRIND

We reported on Datwon Thomas departing from XXL magazine, a couple of weeks ago. Well it seems that Thomas has landed on his feet and is now the new EIC for community based website Global Grind. We all wonder what made Thomas step-down from his role as Editor-in-Chief at the publication. Many people believed it was a sign that the magazine was folding, but it turns out that it was just a business move for Thomas.

"It was definitely a hard decision, but it opens up the door for a new beginning," he explained in an interview. "More than likely, it's gonna be some fly stuff," he said about what he plans to bring to his next position. "I think if people check my resume, a lot of things I've been with have been successful and really well. I look forward to seeing what I'ma do, too. I'm a fan of me." (MTV)

PM TECH: MICROSOFT ZUNE HD

Two and a half years after Apple released the IPOD Touch, Microsoft is set to release the Zune HD, an HD touchscreen version of the Zune music player. The Zune HD will feature a a 3.3-inch, 480 x 272 16:9 OLED capacitive touchscreen display, which is smaller than the IPOD Touch and Windows Mobile devices. It also features a HD video out (capable of outputting 720p HD TV using the Zune AV dock sold separately), HD radio, WiFi, and XBOX integration with XBOX Live. Price and capacity has not been released yet, but look for the Zune HD to hit stores this fall.

PM ENT: WILL SMITH TO STAR IN KATRINA MOVIE "THE AMERICAN CAN"

Actor Will Smith's production company Overbrook Entertainment has acquired the rights to "The American Can", a film which Smith will play an ex-marine who was saving lives during Hurricane Katrina.

Standing a 6-foot-seven and 260 pounds, John Keller, the ex-Marine, lived in a five-story apartment building and after chasing some looters, emerged as the man in charge of the edifice and of the 244 residents, many of them elderly or handicapped. For five days, Keller, dubbed the “Can Man,” kept the building, isolated by 11 feet of water, safe from the chaos raging around the city. He also directed the eventual rescue operation from the building’s roof.

“This is the story of an everyman who became a hero,” said Columbia’s Doug Belgrad in a statement. “John Keller embodies everything about the American spirit: he is tough, smart, resourceful, funny, and not the type of guy who takes ‘no’ or ‘I can’t’ for an answer. That is the story we want to tell — in the moment of an American tragedy, when we are tested, we find that we have greater depth of spirit and strength than we ever knew.”
